Good question!
It’s obvious that social networks are big business for the owners of social network internet sites themselves. Mashable reports that MySpace is making about $25M per month in ad revenue- no small chunk of change. Facebook is, as of August 2007, the second largest social network as compared to MySpace in terms of traffic volume.
There are numerous avenues for mere mortals to exploit the Facebook facility and its culture to financial advantage. Look for additional commentary on this topic under this category (moneyface).
Advertisers and advertiser networks are making some money as suppliers to the Facebook application development community.
A few of the ‘cream of the crop’ application developers/owners are possibly making some money or are poised to do so if they can hang on long enough. Rumours abound of sales of Facebook applications, such as the sales of “Where I’ve Been” application for some $3m by TripAdvisor. The dust hasn’t yet settled as of the date of this writing as to the truth in this rumour.
Some hope to make a little ‘pocket change’ to defray expenses by placement of Google Ads on blog content, assuming they generate sufficient traffic to be noticed.
I am among thousands of others across the world, hoping to launch the next big Facebook application that garners millions of loyal Facebook users. Once established with a large user base, applications can start to deliver monetarily through ad placements, sponsorship or even sale of the application itself.
